Rea Vaya provides services for the Soweto Derby on Saturday, 29 February 2020

The Rea Vaya BRT service, will on Saturday be on full operation for the Soweto Derby soccer match between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs this Saturday, 29 February 2020. 


The game, which is set to kick off at 15h30, will be played at the City’s giant First National Bank (FNB) Stadium. 

Apart from rendering services for this match, our key stakeholder, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, and law enforcement agencies will ensure easy mobility and safety for all supporters who will use both private and public transport to access the stadium facilities. 


The Transport Department will be engaging supporters at the Rea Vaya FNB stadium through promotional activation campaigns on education and awareness on public transport safety and services rendered by Rea Vaya BRT. 

“I encourage supporters and fans to use public transport to avoid traffic congestion and for safe convenient travel to and from the FNB Stadium. Park ‘n Rides are convenient parking space to enable soccer fans to access public transport routes” said Member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport, Cllr Nonhlanhla Makhuba. 


“It is important for supporters to use public transport and avoid traffic congestion on various routes. We also urge motorists to refrain from driving through the Rea Vaya dedicated lane as this affect bus scheduling.” Makhuba added. 

It will be a quicker and more convenient option to get to FNB Stadium from the inner-city and Soweto using Rea Vaya as buses will travel at 5 minutes from 12h00 before kick off time. 


Rea Vaya buses will operate from the Joburg Inner City, Cresta, Auckland Park, Westbury, Bosmont, New Canada, Florida North, Parktown, Yeoville, Eldorado Park and Soweto to transport soccer fans to and from the FNB Stadium. 


The Rea Vaya Station at FNB Stadium will be open from 10:00. 

The T1 and C1 service will run at a frequency of 15 minutes in the morning and the T1 service will step up the service to a 5 minutes frequency from 12:00 to 15:30. T3 will operate at 15 minutes frequency throughout the day.


After the match, all services leaving from FNB Stadium will operate at 3 minutes frequency. The service will end at 19:00. All feeder buses will operate at 20 minute frequencies with the last bus leaving the starting point at 20:00.  Soccer fans can either use their Smart cards or buy single or double trip cards obtainable from all Rea Vaya stations. Single trip cards cost R21.00 and double trip cards R42.00.


Smartcard holders will pay fares based on distance travelled to the FNB stadium. Residents from most parts of Soweto who use smartcards will be paying on average R20 for return trip to the soccer match

Use F5 to Lakeview Station and then transfer to TI

Use C5, and transfer to T3 at Helen Joseph Station and then transfer to T1 at Orlando Stadium

Use C4 and transfer to T3 at UJ Sophiatown and then transfer to T1 at Orlando Stadium 

Lea Glen, Fleurhof, Amalgam, Bosmont, Riverlea 

Use F6 or F7 and transfer at Industria West to T3 and then transfer to T1 at Orlando Stadium 

Greymont 

Use F8 and connect T3 at Westbury station and then transfer
