In a concerted effort to promote and maintain public transport safety for passengers and residents, the City of Joburg has introduced public road safety initiatives and awareness programmes. The new road safety initiative is implemented jointly by JMPD, Bus operating companies (Piotrans and Litsamaiso) and Transport Department.
Visible JMPD officers continue to assist Transport Department and bus operating companies by performing random bus drivers’ alcohol testing along the routes between Soweto and the Joburg CBD particularly over the weekends and public holidays.
Buses are randomly stopped at convenient points and bus drivers are tested for alcohol. “In all testing programmes conducted by JMPD to-date, we are pleased that no driver was found to have alcohol content in their system,” said Mr Mpho Morokolo, Operations Manager at Litsamaiso bus operating company.
Bus drivers and passengers support this initiative as it promotes road safety and “Don’t drink and Drive” attitude.
Buses are also checked for roadworthy, overloading and speeding. In an effort to maintain driver-employee relations and safety for passengers, bus operating companies have implemented wellness programmes where drivers do medical check-ups.
MMC of Transport, Cllr Makhuba acknowledge and appreciate joint working relations between Public Safety Department and Transport for maintaining the safety of public transport, walking and cycling for residents and passengers of the City of Joburg.
