Since 2007 the City of Joburg has been working on the first phase of the Bus Rapid Transit System in Joburg City, aimed at significantly improving public transport in the City.
48 stations and 10 median key stations are currently operational on 59km of trunk routes.
To date, Rea Vaya has a fleet of 277 buses and the Phase 1C bus fleet will number between 240 to 260 buses (fuel source to be determined).
Phase 1C construction commenced in March 2014 and will be completed by 2017.
Services to be introduced in phases from 2016/17 will comprise 16km of dedicated trunk route, with three complementary and two feeder routes.
Three interchanges for public transport integration will be built at Watt Street Alexandra, Sandton and Westgate where passengers will benefit from a new integrated transport plan that fuses Rea Vaya BRT, Metrobus, and the minibus taxi and metered taxi network.
Rea Vaya will be rolled out in the north-east quadrant – from the inner city to Alexandra, Sandton, Randburg, Greenstone, Ivory Park, Rabie Ridge, Sandton, Randburg and Midrand.

5700 jobs will be created during the construction phase and for every one job created in construction, another two are created in the cement, iron and steel industries.
A new depot is to be built for the Phase 1B operations in Booysens, south of Johannesburg. Two new depots will be built in Alexandra and Ivory Park for Phase 1C.
340 permanent jobs have already been created in the first BOC and some 200 more jobs will be created in the second BOC, with a possible 500 more in Phase 1C; some of these jobs will replace jobs in the taxi industry.
Part of the Rea Vaya Phase 1C infrastructure will feature 30.5km of extensive walking and cycling paths in Alex, improved pavements along Louis Botha Avenue, and a dedicated cycle and walking path, with an iconic bridge, from Alexandra to Sandton.
